What to Do When a Drain Becomes Blocked

Practical, safe steps to take when a sink, shower or toilet drain blocks — and the signs the problem is in your main sewer line.

First, work out how big the problem is

If only one fixture is slow, the blockage is probably close to that fixture. If several fixtures are affected, or water is rising in a shower when the toilet is flushed, the main sewer line may be blocked.

Safe things you can try

  • Remove and clean the plug or strainer
  • Pull hair out of shower and basin wastes
  • Use a plunger on sinks and toilets
  • Pour hot (not boiling) water down a greasy kitchen sink

What to avoid

  • Chemical drain cleaners — they can damage pipes and are hazardous
  • Repeatedly flushing a blocked toilet
  • Pushing objects deeper with wire

When it's time for a plumber

Call a plumber if water is overflowing from the outdoor gully, multiple fixtures are affected, or the drain keeps blocking. Recurring blockages often mean roots or pipe damage.
