Why hidden leaks matter

Leaks inside walls, under floors or underground can run for months before anyone notices. Over that time they can waste water, raise bills and damage timber, plaster and flooring.

Signs to look out for

  • A water bill that's higher than usual
  • Damp patches, bubbling paint or stained ceilings
  • Musty smells or mould in wet areas
  • Soggy or unusually green patches of lawn
  • The sound of running water when everything is off
  • Cracked tiles or lifting floor coverings near wet areas

How to check your water meter

Turn off all taps and water-using appliances. Note the meter reading or take a photo, then avoid using water for at least an hour. If the reading has changed, water is going somewhere.

When to call a plumber

If the meter moves or you see signs of water damage, it's worth getting a licensed plumber to locate the leak before the damage spreads.
