Plumbing advice
How to decide whether to repair or replace a hot water system, based on age, the type of fault and running costs.

When repair usually makes sense
- The system is relatively young
- A replaceable component has failed (element, thermostat, valve)
- The tank itself isn't leaking
When replacement is usually better
- The tank is leaking or rusted through
- The system is old and repairs are frequent
- Your household's hot water needs have changed
- You want to reduce running costs with a more efficient system
Questions to ask yourself
How old is the system? How often has it needed repairs? Is it big enough? Is there gas available? A plumber can help you weigh these up.
